Ballenger, Jesse,
Self, Senility, and Alzheimer's Disease in Modern America: A History Baltimore: Johns Hopkins University Press. ISBN: .
Comments:
Andrew Achenbaum argues that this book weaves together biomedical data, social science inquiries, policy issues, and popular attitudes, and that is certainly true. But the personal touch, provided by Ballenger's interaction with a patient suffering from "dementia", also seems to lift this book from yet another treatise about helpful tips and looks, instead, at the way that the dread of this disease has helped shape knowledge, health policy, and the experience of caregivers and those suffering from it. Important. Well-done.

Comments:
Another important national debate
about whether faith-based organizations should be permitted to compete
to administer government
programs as all other non-profit corporations. The authors claim
that politics, rhetoric, infighting, and poor communication derailed
Bush's proposals. But the future? Good topic, but.

Nation-Building: Beyond Afghanistan and Iraq Baltimore: The Johns Hopkins University Press. ISBN: .

The very first sentence, which notes how President George W. Bush has gone through "a strking transformation" on nation-building (from opponent to "grandiose social engineer" (p. 1), also marks the increasingly disillusionment of former Bush apologists for the man in the Oval Office. This is a must-read, both for the insights into the ongoing conflicts in these two countries but also for the eloquent frustration of learned scholars who seek to provide more competent guidelines for future leaders than lapsing into the current failure of institutional memory and the gap between doctrine and the efforts of the U.S. government.

Grandin, Greg,
Empire's Workshop: Latin America, the United States, and the Rise of the New Imperialism New York: Henry Holt and Company. ISBN: .
Comments:
Has the United States has used Latin America as a laboratory for America's rise as a world power? In this impressive and provocative book, Grandin argues that this is what has happened for decades, based on research that has uncovered the "buried history" of the New Right's involvement in Central America. He also discusses the ways that the "new imperialism" is "going primitive" as it moves away from "a dependency on ever more sophisticated firepower" and prepares for "nontraditional low-intensity conflict" (p. 91). A must-buy.

Persons, Humanity, and the Definition of Death Baltimore: The Johns Hopkins University Press. ISBN: .
Comments:
As Lizza points out, recent legal and clinical cases have challenged previous definitions of death, so he presents the first comprehensive analysis of personhood and humanity within this context. He examines the basic ontological, ethical, and cultural issues and proposes a non-reductive, substantive view that supports a consciousness-relation formulation. This bold and competent analysis offers a much-needed dimension to this modern debate.

Cross of Iron: The Rise and Fall of the German War Machine, 1918-1945 New York: Henry Holt and Company. ISBN: .
Comments:
Now, more than 50 years later, military historians are still sorting out the myths, realities, and achievements of Germany in this period, but John Mosier argues that the Wehrmacht's superiority lay in its institutional memory, not equipment or training. The lesson, he suggests, is that even the oldest and greatest armies in the world can, if guided by poor leadership, descend to the level of thugs in uniform and lose its honor. A disturbing thought, indeed, and perhaps a warning for modern warriors.

Princen, Thomas,
The Logic of Sufficiency Cambridge: The MIT Press. ISBN: .
Comments:
Every once in a while, we see the work of a scholar whose research has huge long-term theoretical implications, and this book certainly qualifies for that category. Princen argues that we need to shift from the organizing principle of efficiency, or the "relentless subjection of means to immediate ends" (p. xi), to sufficiency and the notions of ecological rationality and "self-management in an ecologically constrained world" (p. 23). A wonderfully coherent reflection on a meta-theory that offers scholars and other serious thinkers hope in an era of diseased livestock, decreasing water supplies, and destabilizing climate.
